In 1926, Howard Hill set a hand held bow flight record officially measured to be 391 yards 2 feet 11 inches. The arrows used in shooting appeared to be of birch, barreled in shaft shape and tipped with small aluminum points. The fletchings of those arrows were hand made by Howard from plastic business cards. This was long before anyone else had used plastic, and long before plastic vanes were introduced to the market. So yes, he very well could be considered the father of the plastic vane, and displayed yet one more way that he was way ahead of his time. :-)

The longbow Howard Hill used was made of Florida Snakewood with a draw weight of 172 pounds.
This hand held bow record also beat out the foot bow flight record of the time.
Interestingly, while practicing a couple days prior to his setting of the record, he had shot arrows over 400 yards with about the same poundage of longbow made out of Osage Orange sent to him from E.F. Pope (no relation, or connection to Saxton Pope that I know of) who was living in Woodville Texas.

I wonder why he thought about using the plastic vane? Must be some evidence of better preforming in flight shooting?
